Options for Installing a Plug-In Style Connector for a 12v Air Compressor for a 2006 Chevy Duramx
Question:
I have a 2006 chevy durmax, and I have a 12v air compressor that hooks to the battery posts. I was wondering if I could put a seven way plug on the compressor to run it?

I assume you want to use a 7-way connector, like part # PK12706, on your 12v air compressor to power the compressor using the 7-way trailer connector on your truck. You can use a 7-way trailer connector on your air compressor as long as the wire size for the power wire and ground wire from the compressor are not thicker than the 12 volt power wire and ground wire on your truck. The ground wire and 12 volt power wire on your truck are likely either 10 or 12 gauge wire.
If your compressor has thicker wires, the compressor could over heat or over draw the current on the trucks wires. You will want to verify the amperage draw of the compressor and the amperage rating of the 12 volt power circuit on your truck. If your truck has the factory trailer wiring, then it will be protected by a 40 amp fuse. If your compressor draws more than 40 amps, the fuse for the 12 volt power circuit will blow.
If the wires for your compressor are thicker than the truck wires or draws more than the power circuit can handle, then we will want to go a different route.
Another plug-in style option that you could use is a set of quick connects like part # DL24085 and an appropriate length of wire that is the same size or gauge as the wires on your compressor. The largest wire size we carry is 10 gauge, # 10-1-1. For larger gauges, you may need to contact an electrical supply store. These quick connects were designed to be used with dc powered winches, but they will work for your air compressor as well.
