Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2011 Scion tC
Question:
I really want to buy the car pod. I really like the high sides and think it would be the best option for me but it isnt listed under your recommendations for my car. Does that mean it wont work with my vehicle. I have a 2011 scion tc.

Hitch mount cargo carriers are not tested to fit to specific vehicles. Instead, they are designed to work with specific classes of trailer hitches. The Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier, # M2205, that you referenced was designed to work with Class III and Class IV trailer hitches with a 2 inch receiver opening.
I have some options available for you, however, I do not recommend using the Carpod carrier with your 2011 Scion tC. All of the trailer hitches available for the tC are Class I trailer hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver.
There are adapters available that would allow you to use the Carpod carrier with a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver, however, those adapters will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by half. Since Class I trailer hitches have a maximum tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs, you would be left with only 100 lbs. After you subtract the weight of the Carpod carrier (59 lbs), you would only be able to carry up to 40 lbs of cargo.
To retain the maximum weight capacity of your trailer hitch, I recommend using a cargo carrier that is compatible with Class I trailer hitches and one that does not require the use of an adapter. We have 4 cargo carriers that are compatible with Class I trailer hitches. I have attached a link to them for you to check out. Of these carriers, I recommend the Reese 20 x 47 Cargo Carrier, # 63155. This carrier has walls and only weighs 44 lbs.
If you will be carrying smaller items that require a carrier with taller walls, I recommend adding a cargo bag like the etrailer Cargo Bag, # e98990.
If you need a trailer hitch as well, I recommend installing the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24815. I have attached the installation instructions for this trailer hitch as well as a few FAQ articles on trailer hitches and hitch cargo carriers for you to check out.
