Converting Trailer From Air Brakes to Electric Brakes
Question:
I am look to purchase a military trailer to use as a water-tank hauling trailer. The trailer has air brakes and 4-pin trailer connection. I have a 7-pin RV-style connector on my pickup with brake controller inside. What do I need to make the conversion? Estimated cost?

So to convert from hydraulic air brakes to electric drum brakes on your trailer there are a few things you will need. The brakes, of course, but also a junction box, trailer side 7-way, breakaway kit, and wire:
- Epicord 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box # 277-000141
- Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308
- Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, Brake Wire (sold per foot) # 10-2-1
The brakes are going to depend on the size of your drum and axle capacity. For example if your trailer has a 3,500 lb axle and 10 inch drum (the inside diameter) you would need the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 3,500 lbs # 23-26-27. Or if you had a 7 inch drum and 2,000 lb or 2,200 lb axle you would need the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 2,000 to 2,200 lbs # 23-47-48.
You can find the cost of each of the parts on their respective product pages or by scrolling down.
