The Furrion RV Tankless Water Heater # FR98SR will only come on when a hot water tap is open.
I've talked with Furrion about this before and they stated if it was just dropping below freezing during the night that it wouldn't hurt the # FR98SR, but if it was sitting in temperatures consistently below freezing that it would need to be winterized to avoid damage.
Theoretically, you could make some sort of insulator to go over the outside of the unit (when not in use) since the inside would be getting warmth from your trailer and the door/exhaust tube is where you'd be losing heat.
If you had full hookups you could also possibly just let the hot water trickle like most people would in a residential setting, but if anything went wrong with the unit while in use below freezing you'd probably fall outside of Furrion's warranty coverage.
If you haven't already purchased the # FR98SR or you're handy enough to run some pipe and a diverter you could add in a second water heater like the Excel RV Tankless Water Heater # EX93FR, which can be installed inside of your trailer and wouldn't be at risk of freezing, as long as your heater/furnace is keeping your trailer warm.
Obviously adding in a second water heater would be quite a bit of work and you would need some sort of diverter to switch your water heating source back and forth between the two. You could also just run the # EX93FR to a specific sink or shower like a point-of-use water heater.
