To add a 4-Way trailer connector to your 1997 Ford F-150 you can use # C55344. This harness plugs in line with the tail light wiring on the truck. It will provide left turn/brake lights, running lights, and right turn/brake lights. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.
If you are having trouble with a 7-Way trailer connector then it is possible that there is a blown fuse or relay that is causing the problems. Use the vehicle owners manual and/or the legend on the power distribution box lid to find the locations of the fuses and relays related to the tow package wiring so you can check them.
Fuses are easy to check but with relays the best way to determine if they are working is to use a known good relay in place of a potential bad one. Then if the function starts working you know the other relay was bad. The fuses and relays are not available individually but they are included with replacement 7-Way connectors, # C55242 and # 118242.
