Correct Replacement 4-Way Wiring Harness for 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE With Factory Tow Package
Question:
I recently purchased a 2017 Highlander XLE used. It already has a trailer hitch, but the trailer wiring is defective. Per Toyota, all XLE trim models of the 2017 Highlander came with a towing package. Therefore, it would theoretically not need a converter box Curt part # C56217. But, there is a defective converter box in the rear cargo area. Is there a connection the 10 pin connector I believe for installing a Curt converter box in a Highlander that came with a towing package? If not, then my car did not come with a towing package after all. But, if all the 2017 Highlanders have a 10 pin connector, does using a converter box provide a level of protection to the cars wiring / electrical system that you dont get by just plugging in a new 4 way harness to the cars plug?

Expert Reply:
A 2017 Toyota Highlander without the tow package has the same 10 pin connection you have on your XLE. The difference is whether or not it comes with the converter installed. Typically you would need the # 56042 since it does not come with the converter.
You said your converter is bad so you can use the # C56217 for a replacement since it comes with the wiring harness and converter box. The converter does protect the wiring by reducing power draw. It also combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights.
