Brake Controller Recommendation to Replace Curt Spectrum on a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
Question:
I have the Curt spectrum controller. It never worked. wast of good money. since then I have learned many forums say they have had same problem. My question is can a OEM controller be put in a 2018 base 1500 sierra that has a trailer package but no OEM controller. Dealer said no when I bought the truck. Trying to stay away from under dash banged knee old days. Thank you

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the Curt Spectrum # C51170. I wish I could tell you different than the dealership but unfortunately they know more about the OEM package and how it interacts with the factory brake controller.
With that being said, we do have a variety of brake controllers that will work great with your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 and for that I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR which connects to the same port the Spectrum did by using the Wiring Adapter # 331-TPH-010.
The Tow-Pro Liberty is similar to the Spectrum in that it installs up and out of the way and it uses lights to communicate what's going on, but it differs in that it is a completely solid brake controller that I've only heard good things about. Redarc is based in Australia so all of their products have been designed around that environment.
Attached is a review video of the Tow-Pro Liberty for you to check out.
