Hub is Hot With Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brakes

Question:

I purchased 4 Dexter brake assemblies from you several years ago. Just recently I have one brake that is self adjusting too tight and heating the hub up very hot. I have adjusted it back to where it should be and the next time out, the brake adjusts itself too tight again. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the pads, shoes, brackets, or springs. What is going on here. Thanks for your help on this.

I don't know what's wrong but I can make some guesses with the issues with your hub and the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469 you purchased from us. Most likely it isn't the brakes at all, the issue is your suspension and hub.

Generally with a hub that is overheating, a spindle nut is too tight, which causes the bearings to stress and overheat. So check that and back off on the spindle nut a bit to see if this helps; also check to ensure your hub bearings and are still good and greased properly. There is also the possibility that the spindle is bent just slightly, or your suspension is out of alignment. This can create friction in the hub and cause it to overheat.
