What is the Towing Capacity of a 2013 Honda CR-V

Question:

I am confused by the weight limitations. The 2013 CRV towing capacity is listed as 1500 lbs by Honda the weight limitations of the hitch are listed at 3500 lbs. What would be considered a safe towing weight for the 2013 Honda CRV with this hitch? I am looking at hauling a lightweight trailer, about 2300 lbs. If this weight would be considered safe, are there other modifications that you know of that I should make on the car to haul this weight? This is all new to me recently single 61 year old woman who wants to continue camping and hope to use my CRV without damage to the vehicle. thanks for any input.

You are correct, the trailer hitch is rated higher than the 2013 Honda CR-V but you still have to go by the weight capacities of the vehicle since they are lower. So you will want to stay within the manufacturers 1500 pound limit, even though the hitch is rated higher.

The 2300 pound trailer is going to be too much for the CR-V. You would either need a different tow vehicle or an even lighter trailer. If you go with a lighter trailer then you will also need a ball mount, pin and clip, ball, and trailer wiring harness. The correct ball mount for hitch # 36520 is # 36051 and it comes with a pin and clip.

For a ball, the coupler on the trailer should say what size it needs. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch use # 19258. And for trailer wiring use # 118561. I have included links to the right of videos showing installations of the hitch and wiring for you.
