Replacing 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector With a 7-Way Blade Connector
Question:
I am trying to rewire my trailer since my new car only has a 7 blade and the trailer has a 4 pin plug. I realize that i could use an adapter but plan to just rewire a new plug on. The problem is that I have 2 white, 2 browns, a green/brown, and a yellow/brown. What are all these wire colors? I assume that the white need to be spliced together. What about the browns? And where do i attach the wires to the 7 blade? The photos of the plug are taken from each side of the 4 pin so you could see the colors. Thank you in advance.

First you will need to select either a 7-Way Connector # PK12706 or the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # HM20285 which is the one I recommend. I feel this is better as the connector is sealed and the wiring connections inside the connector are superior to the screw type with the first option.
The 2 white wires are your ground wires, the 2 brown are your running light wires, the yellow with brown stripe is your left turn signal/brake light and the green with the brown stripe is your right turn signal/brake light wire. The reason you have the 2 whites and 2 brown is the harness is split to run down the frame rails on both sides of your trailer and you need to have a ground and running light wire on both sides of the trailer. With the molded connector I recommended above you will simply connect the white to white, brown to brown, yellow to yellow and green to green. You will then be able to use the Heat Shrink # DW05451 to seal up the connections.
