Best 2022 Toyota RAV4 Trailer Hitch for Rust Prevention

Question:

Is there any sort of plastic protector that can be put on the hitch to protect it from elements and scratches? Also, intended uses: initially using it only for the 4-bike rack that we have. Eventually might extend to other uses including possibly towing a trailer

The trailer hitch that I recommend for your 2022 Toyota RAV4 is the Class III etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e23ZR because it has a matte black finish that not only looks better but also offers a more robust resistance to the elements than the classic glossy black finish we see on all of the other hitches. The towing and tongue weight capacities are 4,000 lbs and 600 lbs respectively which is over the weight rating you'll see in the manual for your vehicle. This is extremely common so as long as you abide by the ratings in your manual you don't ever have to worry about overloading the hitch or your vehicle.

To help prevent rust from happening it's always a good idea to check the hitch periodically for any deep scratches or dings from flying road debris and cover those with a black spray paint ASAP. While the matte black finish is more durable, it isn't completely bulletproof so prevention is the best protection from rust.

Attached is an installation video and a photo of what this hitch looks like installed on a 2022 RAV4. If you let me know what you plan on using the hitch for I'd be more than happy to make additional recommendations!

Unless there is some sort of plastic covering underneath your RAV4 already (which I'm not seeing) then the hitch will be completely exposed as there aren't any universal protectors out there. I wouldn't get too hung up on rust though as it's really just a matter of checking on it every couple of months. The powder coat is pretty durable but I was just trying to convey that it isn't completely free of the threat of rust. Sounds like you'll be all set then if you're just planning on using this for a bike rack at the moment. Eventually you will need to install the T-Connector Wiring Kit # C56434 if you plan on towing a trailer (for the basic trailer light functions) so you can either do that now n the day when you plan on installing the hitch, or just wait until you think you're actually going to tow to get the wiring and install it. Attached is an installation video for the wiring as well as a link to a helpful article about choosing a ball mount that you'll want to check out prior to towing a trailer.
