Will the Red Arc Brake Controller Respond Immediately to a Subaru Outback's Emergency Braking?

Question:

Hi - I am planning to install a 7-wire harness for towing on my 2019 Subaru Outback. One option appears to be the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR with item #RED69FR. Will this brake controller unit respond to Automatic Emergency Braking that the car’s safety system initiates in an emergency situation? Thanks

Expert Reply:

Yes, the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR will engage immediately with Automatic Emergency Braking. This is a proportional brake controller that responds to your Subaru's deceleration. If the braking system automatically stops, if you stand on your brakes, or your car slows during normal deceleration this will engage the brake controller to respond with a matching force to stop your trailer.

The Tow-Pro Liberty uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your Subaru is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your Outback and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. I have linked a graph below that shows this.

Since you do not have the factory towing package you will need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR to complete your installation.

To add a 7-Way vehicle connector to your 2019 Subaru Outback you will need the following parts:

T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # 118467

Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7
