Can Cargo Carrier Be Used As Step for Truck Bed Camper

Question:

I am evaluating use of this cargo carrier for an alternate use: As a step-platform for rear of my slide in pickup camper. Currently I use a small 3 step folding ladder that is awkward as it is only 16 inches wide. So, it appears the C18100 could provide a wider step area, and any extra space could be used for carrying various items. I believe I could adjust the height of the platform by selecting a hitch accessory that will provide the most safe and convenient height from entering and exiting the rear of the camper. What do you think?

Since the 19x60 Curt Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # C18100 has a 500 lb weight capacity you can potentially use it for this application, but my hesitation is that you'd likely be stepping directly on the mesh part of the carrier which is is designed to carry a load that's more spread out than your feet. So while it will definitely hold up, if you step on it enough that mesh will wear down.

What I recommend doing is picking up the cargo carrier for your extra cargo and then installing some stairs like the TorkLift GlowStep Stow N' Go Scissor Steps w/ Landing Gear # TLA7835 that have 20" x 8" steps and is designed for an entry height of 38-1/2" - 50". We actually have a photo a customer sent in where they used this method that I'm attaching for you to check out. The advantage of this system is that the stairs will be more stable than the cargo carrier for standing and you can fold them up on the bracket before you start heading down the road so you have more access to your cargo carrier.

If you choose to use the steps let me know if your entry height doesn't fall within the range listed above. Otherwise if you want to stick with the carrier I recommend picking up the Locking Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin # 63232 to secure and stabilize the carrier.

Attached are some review videos for you to reference.
