Parts Needed to Replace 3,500 lb Hydraulic Drum Brakes With Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes
Question:
I am looking to replace surge brakes on a 40-year old trailer with electric brakes. I want to make sure i buy the right ones. Can someone help me the brakes that will fit my trailer and existing hardware? Thank you in advance. the diameter of the drum is 10”; the distance between the four bolts is 2 7/8 inches. I think these would work: 23-468-469

Thanks so much for that specific info, and for your brake flange distance and drum diameter, you are right on with the Dexter electric brakes # 23-468-469 working for you. Along with the brakes, you'll also need the wiring, 7-way connector, and breakaway kit to complete the transition from hydraulic drum brakes to electric trailer brakes.
- Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # 23-468-469
- Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308
- Trailer Wiring Junction Box # 3375601100
- Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, Brake Wire (Per Foot) # 10-2-1
- 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector - 4' Long # H20043 or 8' Long # H20046
- Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector - 12-10 Gauge # DW05745-5
The Dexter brakes come with the mounting hardware, and you'll connect them to the brake wire with the butt connectors. The junction box and 7-way will complete the overall wiring, but you'll also need the breakaway kit to ensure your trailer's brakes engage should the trailer ever become disconnected.
