Replacement Brake Actuator and Brakes for 4,000 Pound Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

How do I choose a surge brake actuator for 2 axles? I need to replace my boat trailer rated 4000 lbs with 2 axles. The old brake system only had brakes on one axle, but I need brakes on both axles. Is the Titan actuator Item # T43397007K which appears similar to my old actuator adequate for 2 axle drum brakes with your drum brake kit Item # AKFBBRK-35-D

Choosing the correct brake actuator typically depends on your gross trailer weight rating. In this case, the Titan # T43397007K is a good fit as long as you don't need a lockout. Based on the fact that you're looking at the # AKFBBRK-35-D as well I'm assuming you already have free backing brakes so a lockout isn't necessary. This brake actuator fits a 3" wide channel tongue and can use a 1-7/8" or 2" ball.

Assuming you have a 3,500 lb axle with a 4 bolt brake mounting flange, you can use the # AKFBBRK-35-D. If you need hub and drum assemblies to go with them you can use the # AKHD-545-35-G-K. You may want to double check your axles just to be sure with that 4,000 lb rating. If you have 2,000 lb axles then they will have a 7" drum which will need a 7" brake assembly. 7" hydraulic brake assemblies are not something that we offer at this time.

I have attached some installation videos for your reference.
