Can Spare Tire Carrier Be Mounted On Trailer Wall

Question:

Could this type of bracket also be mounted through the side wall of a cargo trailer instead of on the tongue? I am looking for a bracket that I can drill holes through the side wall and mount in front of the trailer tire.

From the photo you sent, it looks like you have aluminum trailer walls, so the first thing you will want to consider is the strength of the walls. Since the Offset Trailer Spare Tire Carrier, part # DL22120 is designed to be mounted on a trailer tongue or frame, you will want to make sure that the location you choose is strong enough and able to handle the weight.

You will want to consider strengthening the wall by reinforcing with a metal plate on the inside of the wall between the brackets and the inner wall of the trailer. This would prevent the wall from possibly collapsing due to the weight of the carrier and tire, and added stress on the wall. The DL22120, is designed for 9 to 14 inch wheels with 4 or 5 lugs, bolt circles up to 5-on-4-1/2.

Another thing to consider is the width of the spare tire carrier with the wheel/tire installed. If your trailer is wide, the additional width of the carrier and tire could cause issues by sticking out too far. I have linked you to an installation video for this spare tire carrier.

I would also recommend the Spare Tire Carrier Lock, part # FSTL0603

I would also recommend the Spare Tire Carrier Lock, part # 262DAT, that would deter theft of the spare tire when mounted to your trailer. This lock is designed to fit over 1/2 inch studs.
