Parts Needed to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2003 Toyota Sequoia SR5

Question:

I am not sure if my Sequoia has a factory tow package but it has a transmission cooler, plug for the controller under left panel, Reese tow hitch and a 7 way plug. I want to install a Tekonsha P3 but I only see 4 wires going into that 7 way plug. Those wires are actually connected from a 4 way plug few inches behind. How do I proceed with the installation?

It sounds like you do not have the complete tow package, otherwise the 7-Way would be fully functional. What we need to figure out is if the port to plug in a brake controller is functional. You can test this by using a circuit tester, # PTW2993, and testing the pins on the factory port. One should be hot all the time (key might have to be on), and one will show power when you push on the brake pedal. If those work then you can use the vehicle specific harness, # 3040-P, with a Tekonsha brake controller. If not, then it will be a complete hardwire situation.

If the port does work, then you will need to cut off the blue wire from the plug on the harness that plugs into the vehicle. This is because you will manually have to run a wire from this blue wire to the 7-Way. You can use wire # 12-1-1. It is sold in 1-foot increments so you will need enough to reach from the cab, through the firewall, under the truck, avoiding areas that can pinch and burn the wire, and to the 7-Way and attach to the back of the 7-Way in the 7:00 position.

If your port is not functional then you will not need the 3040-P harness and instead will use installation kit # 5506. The white wire will ground to the negative battery terminal. Black will go first to the AUX post of the included circuit breaker that will get mounted to the metal of the engine compartment. Then run a wire from the BAT post to the positive battery terminal.

Blue will need to go back to the 7-Way as described above. And red connects to the cold side of the brake switch. Use the circuit tester to test the brake switch wires located above the brake switch. You need the one that only shows power when the brakes are applied and NOT also when the headlights or turn signals are on.

For a brake controller the P2 # 90885 that you referenced is an excellent choice. This is a very popular controller because it is reliable, easy to use, and easy to set up.
