How to Add an Aftermarket Brake Controller to a 2013 Chevy Silverado w/ OEM Controller
Question:
I have a 2013 chevy Silverado 3500hd. It already has tow package with a built in brake controller. I have a message popping up on the dash saying service trailer brake system I have taken to different shops and they can’t fix it. So I wonder what do I need to put a aftermarket brake controller under the dash and due away with the factory one.

To add an aftermarket brake controller to your 2013 Chevy Silverado, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite item # RED44FR. This is a proportional brake controller that will engage your trailer's brakes when your Chevy decelerates. It activates immediately and is not time delayed. The Tow-Pro Elite has a unique installation method that allows you to mount the main control unit out of sight behind your dash. The only part visible is the control knob.
To disconnect your factory controller you will want to start by disconnecting the wires connected to it. This should allow you to use your new controller without interference from the OEM. If that doesn't work you will need to go to a shop or a Chevy dealership and have them reset your computer.
