Tekonsha P2 Trailer Brake Controller Makes a Hissing Noise when Brakes are Released
Question:
I have a 2012 Toyota Tundra with a tow package and a prodigy P2 brake controller - the vehicle stops fine, but I noticed a sound that I hadnt heard before when I release the brakes - a short hissing sound - I noticed this when I reset the brake parameters - its set at about 2.5 using the manuel knob and 6.2 boost - Is this anything to worry about? Thank you.

That is odd behavior for a brake controller. It should not be hissing at you. To figure out what is going on you will want to disconnect the brake controller and drive the truck like normal. If you continue to hear the noise then it is not the brake controller. It could be a vacuum leak somewhere that you will want to have checked out and repaired.
If it only happens when the controller is active then that indicates the issue is most likely the controller. If you smell anything burning or see smoke from the controller then stop using it immediately. If it continues to make the sound I still recommend replacing it because that could be an indication that it could fail.
I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he stated that there was nothing in the brake controller that could make a hissing noise but if it is a sizzle that could indicate a short inside.
