Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier to Clear Spare Tire on 1999 Jeep Wrangler
Question:
Hi, I am looking for a receiver cargo carrier that can fold up out-of-the-way for a 1999 jeep wrangler sahara. Wondering what you could suggest, keeping in mind the jeep wrangler has the rear tailgate spare tire, so there may be a clearance issue. Thank you and looking forward to doing business with etrailer.com again.

The first step in choosing a cargo carrier for your Wrangler would be to determine how much clearance is needed. Measure from the hitch pin hole of your receiver rearward until you can clear the spare tire. You will then need to choose a cargo carrier whose hitch pin hole to closest portion of the cargo tray dimension exceeds your measurement.
The problem you might find is that the pivot that allows the carriers to fold takes up quite a bit of space on the shank, so that when the carrier is in the folded position, there is not very much room at all between the hitch pin hole and T
This carrier # 6502. When folded down, the edge of the carrier tray is 13 inches away from the hitch pin hole or 7 inches when folded upright.
The folding carrier with the greatest amount of available clearance is the etrailer # e98874. This 24 X 60 carrier sits 19-1/2 inches away from the hitch pin hole when in use and 9-1\2" away when folded up.
Another 24x60 carrier option would be the Curt # C18153. When folded, the carrier offers 9 inches of clearance between the hitch pin hole and the closest portion of the basket. When folded flat, there's 19 inches of clearance.
