Do I Need a Hitch Extender when Using the Yakima EXO # Y62VR on My 2021 Toyota Highlander?

Question:

I read that for the Yakima EXO system to work I need 4-1/4in from the hitch pin holeinch to the back of the car. Does that mean an extension is needed or will the hitch actually protrude Im worried about busting my chins on the hitch Hope I explained this correctly Thanks

Yes. The required 4-1/4" is to make sure that no component of the Yakima EXO # Y62VR interferes with your rear bumper. In order to determine if you have enough space, I recommend measuring from the center of your hitch's pinhole to the outside face of your bumper. As long as that distance is does not exceed 4-1/4", you will not have any clearance problems with the # Y62VR.

If you happen to have a hitch that is too far recessed into your vehicle, you will need a hitch extender. The only approved hitch extender to use with the EXO is the Yakima StraightShot # Y69VR. This adapter adds 7-1/4" of additional length to your hitch receiver. It is also one of our shortest hitch extenders available. It is important to note that you reduce the overall capacity of your hitch by 50% with this adapter.

If you need a great option for a hitch receiver that doesn't require an extender on your 2021 Toyota Highlander, I recommend the etrailer Hitch - 2" # e75ZR. Since this hitch installs super close to the bumper, you do not need to worry about purchasing a hitch extender when using the # Y62VR on your vehicle.

I went ahead and attached some helpful videos for you to check out.
