How Does Proportional Brake Controller Apply Trailer Brakes
Question:
On a full size 30 RV trailer, are electric brakes applied with a steady 12V or is the voltage variable in proportion to desired braking as determined by the brake controller. If steady 12v, how are the trailer brakes applied proportionally? Thanks

A brake controller like the Redarc # RED44FR sends power according to the deceleration of the vehicle and the settings you have it on. It is not going to be a steady 12V unless you have it set to the max or use the manual override.
So, if you lightly apply the vehicle brakes, it senses the force of you stopping and sends the appropriate power to the trailer brakes. If you slam on your brakes you could expect full power in accordance with your settings to be sent to the trailer brakes.
