Parts Needed To Convert Hydraulic Drum Brakes To Electric Drum Brakes On VRSA 12,000LB Tilt Trailer

Question:

I own a VRSA tilt bed 12k equipment trailer with 16inch wheels and want to convert it from hydraulic drum brakes to electric brakes. Can you tell me what parts I will need?

First you will need to replace your hydraulic brake assemblies with the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA. This kit contains the left and right assemblies for one axle so be sure to get 2 for both your axles. The brakes are self adjusting so no adjustments will be needed once they are bedded in.

If your hubs are severely worn or grooved we have the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K that comes pre greased with the bearings and grease seal installed. I do recommend getting new Grease Seals # GS-2250DL qty 4 for your hubs as they often become damaged when being removed.

For your trailer you will need the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box # HS381-9000 and Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20400. You will be able to take the wiring from your current connector and fasten it inside the junction box. Then 12 Gauge Wire # 12-1-1 is needed to run from the junction box to the brake assemblies. You can connect the wiring as seen in the image below and the ground wires can be ran to the frame.

You will also need a Brake Controller # 90195 and replacement coupler. If you need help selecting either please let me know what vehicle you tow with and send me an image of your current coupler.
