Draw-Tite hitch # 75118 will fit your 2002 Ford Escape XLS. It is the most popular hitch option for your vehicle. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation and a link to the instructions for you.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 118343. I have linked instructions and a video for the wiring as well.
