Troubleshooting Installation of Electric Brakes With 4 Bolt Brake Flange

Question:

I have an old car hauling trailer. It has a 2 3/4inch bolt pattern for mounting the brakes to the frame. The electric brake kit I bought has a 3inch bolt pattern. Is there an electric brake kit with two and three quarter inch bolt pattern? Or any other advice on how to get these electric brakes installed? Thank you!

Expert Reply:

The measurements for the brake flange and the bolt pattern on trailer brakes is a center to center measurement, not outside to outside. The electric brakes you have appear to be using the industry standard which is typically listed as 2-3/4" or 2-7/8" with the actual dimension being more like 2-13/16".

I can't exactly tell by the pictures but it looks like the two measurements you have there are incredibly close so if you have not tried to install these I recommend double checking to make sure they don't fit. If these do not fit the brake flange on your axle, you will need to replace the brake flange with # 4-34 for 1-3/4"axles, # 4-35 for 2-3/8" axles, or # DM52415 for 3" axles.
