Tekonsha Prodigy RF vs Prodigy P2 Dash-Mounted Brake Controller for Use in 2011 Kia Sorento

Question:

I have a 2011 Kia sorento, and It was suggested to me that I used the RF brake controller vs a hard wired dash mounted controller because of the possibility of voiding my factory wiring warranty. I understand that the RF unit applies trailer brakes via an accelerometer. My question is, just how sensitive can this be in knowing how much brake to apply to the trailer brakes in relation to how much brake I am applying to the tow vehicle brakes?

Both RF- and wired-type proportional brake controllers use an accelerometer to detect braking in the tow vehicle in order to send a proportional brake signal to the trailer brakes. These are often preferred over the time-delay type which apply the same user-determined preset braking power no matter the amount of braking applied in the tow vehicle. You might refer to the linked article that reviews these and other brake controller characteristics.

Proportional controllers such as the Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR and the wired Prodigy P2 # 90885 will not effect your vehicle warranty. Consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss warranty act that states in part that unless the part added actually causes a problem then installation and use of the part will not void the vehicle warranty.

Both the RF and wired Prodigy controllers allow you to select from 3 boost levels of initial braking power. Within each of these 3 power levels the accelerometer will provide a proportional signal input to the controller to generate an appropriate signal for your trailer brakes. Each will deliver essentially the same performance. I have linked an installation video for the P2 that might be helpful, along with the instructions for both products. Installation and use of the standard wired P2 will be simpler.

If your Sorento does not have a factory trailer connector you will also need a brake controller install kit, # ETBC7. If there is also no 4-pole flat trailer connector you can select a powered converter trailer wiring kit using the link provided. Use the Select Vehicle Style drop-down menu at the top of the page to choose your particular Sorento and view appropriate trailer harnesses.
