What 7-Way and Brake Controller do You Recommend for My 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
Question:
Hello. I have a 2003 ram 1500. Im considering installing a brake controller. My truck does have the brake controller adapter under the dash. It also has the factory 4 way. What would I need to install a 7 way plug? Since it has the adapter, does this mean the truck is pre-wired for a brake controller? Thank you.

Since your 2003 Ram 1500 has a brake controller connector under the dash, this is usually a sign that your 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 has a factory tow package. If that is the case, you still need a 4-way and a 7-way harness installed.
Since you already have a 4-way installed, all you need is the 7-way Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. With this harness, you will be able to splice into your current wiring in order to prep your 1500 for a brake controller. If you need assistance with the installation, I went ahead and attached a video of the harness being installed on a 2001 model Dodge Ram. The installation on your 2003 model is very similar.
For the brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 or the Curt Echo # C51180. Both of these controllers are proportional controllers which means that the controller activates the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. The Voyager is more of a traditional-style controller that requires mounting into the dashboard of your vehicle near the steering wheel. If you decide to go with the Voyager, you need the plug-in harness # 3020-P to plug into the port under your dash. On the other hand, the Curt Echo allows you to control the settings of your controller with the ease of your Smart device.
