Parts Needed To Convert Boat Trailer From Slipper Spring To Leaf Springs
Question:
I have a very old boat trailer that Ill be replacing the damaged suspension on, originally it had a slipper spring but Ill be changing to a double eye spring. The hangers that are on the trailer are welded on and I dont have a way to change that at the moment. So with the rear hanger I can drill a 9/16inch hole anywhere from 1inch to 1 7/8inch from the base of the trailer, front hanger is 2 1/8inch to center from base of trailer, hangers are spaced 24 7/8inch from center to center and my new spring is 25 1/4inch center eye to eye and says 3 1/8inch free hang. How do I figure what size shackles Ill need?

Since you are converting your trailer from slipper springs to leaf springs I have linked one of our help articles below that will be able to help you with the conversion.
A single axle trailer will typically use a 3-1/8" Long Shackle Strap # TRSL313. I'm not sure that you will be able to utilize your existing rear hangers as with a slipper spring the spring sits inside of the hanger. When you bolt straps to the outside of that hanger the hangers will then be to wide to fit properly on the double eye leaf spring. Our Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs # APS4 has the correct width rear hangers so that when the straps are added they will have the correct length to accept the leaf spring. This type of kit is really the best way to go since it will ensure that you have the correct clearance from the frame when the axle articulates and compresses.
