2001 Nissan Xterra Recommended Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer
Question:
2001 Nissan Xterra tow package

To get towing with your 2001 Nissan Xterra you need a trailer hitch, wiring, a ball mount kit, and possibly a brake controller depending on the size of your trailer (typically it's required for a trailer at or over 2,000 lbs).
I recommend picking up the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13183, 4-Way Wiring # C59496 if you don't have the factory tow package or the T-Connector # C55244 if you do, and Ball Mount Kit # 989899. This gives you everything you need for towing a smaller trailer.
If you're going to be towing a trailer that has brakes installed then you need to add a brake controller to the mix as well as install some extra wiring with the Wiring Kit # ETBC7. I recommend using the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 controller because it's a cost-effective option that is still reliable which can be hit or miss with some of the controllers that don't cost an arm and a leg.
Attached is an installation video of the ETBC7 wiring and the upgraded Prodigy P3 # 90195 brake controller being installed on an '01 Xterra for you to check out.
