Weight Distribution Recommendation for Towing Trailer with 659 lb Tongue Weight
Question:
I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 v6 that has 6200 and 620 towing ratings. The setup I want is a camper with 4830 GVWR. According to dealer this would put 579 at hitch. Assuming we max the camper out, add on propane and battery I am likely at 659lbs. Again estimates but in all likelihood I will be over the 620 hitch weight on the Jeep. So the question is, buying a weight distribution hitch to even out the load would this allow me to use this setup? Does it take some weight off the tongue since I am no longer dead towing? Also, do you know the GCVWR of my Jeep? I understand that this is a more accurate rating for towing when using a WDH. Thank you. Also, which model WDH would you suggest?

A weight distribution system does move some of the trailer's tongue weight by way of spring bar leverage up to the front axle of the tow vehicle. There isn't an exact amount that gets moved and there isn't a way to get the exact number confirmation you are looking for but typically if the hitch of the vehicle is rated for weight distribution there will be a second set of towing capacities listed for when the WD system is used. I'd recommend checking there to see if you find a higher number listing.
For what you listed though I would recommend the Reese Strait Line part # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400 - 800 lbs and features best sway control at fighting sway before it starts.
