Hitch Adapter to Raise a Cargo Carrier up 8 for Clearance in a Low Vehicle

Question:

I have a 2011 Odyssey and I want to use one of your receiver-mounted cargo baskets with my Curt 2inch frame-mounted, below-bumper receiver hitch. But the Oddy is SO LOW that the basket will surely bottom out almost everywhere. I want to use a high-low receiver adapter to raise the basket at least 8inch so it can be usable. Ill carry about 200# in it or less. Bulky stuff. What do you recommend? Thanks!

I can provide you with an option but you probably aren't going to be hitting the 200 lb. mark you are hoping for, especially after taking the weight of the cargo carrier into consideration. You can use the Roadmaster High-Low Adapter # RM-048-8. The catch is that when using an adapter that extends your hitch, which is what an adapter to gain rise does. You will reduce your hitches tongue weight rating by 50%. Obviously, how much weight that leaves you with depends on the hitch that you have. The Curt hitch we have with a 2" receiver has a tongue weight of 350 lbs. This means you would only have a capacity of 175 lbs. after using the rise adapter. You would also need a pin and clip like the Curt Pin and Clip # C21510 to hold the adapter in your hitch.

I would recommend using the 22-1/2x49 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18113 because it is lightweight, weighing only 25 lbs. this will allow you to maximize the amount you can carry. But you would still only be looking at carrying a maximum of 150 lbs. of additional cargo in the carrier. This is all assuming your hitch has a 350 lb. tongue weight rating, you would want to check you specific hitch for the rating.
