Disabling the GM Factory Installed Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) on 2018 Silverado 2500 HD
Question:
I have a 2018 Silverado HD that came with an integrated brake controller in the dash. It has been problematic since the truck was new and gives the service trailer brake system warning constantly. if this warning is showing on the dash I have no trailer brakes. Will this under dash controller replace the factory one and solve my problem?

We can help you with this. When installing an aftermarket brake control into your 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 that is equipped with a factory Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC), you will have to disable the ITBC first before the aftermarket brake controller will properly function. Please note the linked Technical Bulletin that explains the steps. This article is listed for vehicles 2007-2013, though an older article it is still applicable for the later models.
Once those listed steps have been accomplished, you can install the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, # 3016 and install the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195. But, you will need to cut the blue wire exiting the controller and splice in a length of 10 gauge wire. We have the # 10-1-1 available if needed. This wire is run to the back of your truck and connected to the 7-way RV style plug.
The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195 is the possibly the most commonly used brake controller. It has been produced for years and continues to hold a very solid and well earned reputation. If you are frustrated with the integrated brake controller from GM and just want something that is functional, well built and will do what yo need it to with out hassle, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195.
