What Front-Hitch Cargo Carrier do You Recommend for My 100-Pound Generator on My 2017 Ford F-150?

Question:

I am looking for a hitch carrier to carry a Cummins 100lb generator. I will be installing it in the 2inch hitch receiver mounted in the front end of my Ford F150. I am trying to decide between the Curt C18110 and the Reese 6502 carriers. I do not particularly need the folding feature of the Reese, but I like the added clearance of both models. I am leaning towards the Curt as it is more economical, and rated at 300lbs I would presume it would do OK with the 100 lb generator and maybe 5 gallon gas tank next to it. Any concerns that it is rated Light duty? How much does the Curt 18110 weigh? Thanks!

When deciding between the 20x48 Reese Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # 6502 and the 19x4 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110, I recommend the Curt for the reasons you mentioned but also because of one additional factor: the 3-3/4" shank rise. This rise will give you additional ground clearance on the front end to help prevent bottoming out or scraping.

As far as the 300-pound weight capacity of the Curt, it will work great with your 100-pound Cummins generator as well as a 5-gallon gas tank with no issues. Even though the Curt is rated as "Standard Duty," it provides you the support you need given you do not exceed the 300-pound weight capacity. The Curt # C18110 weighs 30 pounds while the Reese # 6502 weighs 40 pounds. If you need straps to hold down the generator, I recommend S-hook ratchet straps like the Rola Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ S-Hooks # 59305.

If you need a great compatible front hitch with your 2017 Ford F-150, I recommend the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # 65067. This hitch not only provides you with 500 pounds of vertical load weight, it also allows you to install both the Reese and the Curt carriers without bumper interference. The hitch comes with all hardware required for a bolt-on installation.
