Does Trailer Wheel Size Determine How Fast A Trailer Can Be Towed On The Highway?

Question:

I currently have 12” rims on my used utility trailer I just received as a tip haha, but I was wondering if I go bigger if I can go faster. I was told to not hover over 50 with 12” wheels.

Wheel diameter will typically not have a contributing factor on how fast a trailer can go. The limiting factors in trailer speed will generally come down to the tires. For instance we have the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 # AM10130 and Taskmaster 4.80R12 # TT48012C that are both speed rated to 81mph. While the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 # AM10140 is only rated up to 65mph. If you let me know your tire size I can find tires for you rated for more than 50mph.

It is a good idea to also check with the trailer manufacturer for any speed ratings that the trailer itself may have. If your trailer included an owners manual that information will generally be found in there.
