Does a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2007 Volvo XC90 Have to be Fully Functional for a Prodigy RF
Question:
Ive just purchased a travel trailer with electric brakes. Ive installed my Volvo hitch, 7/4 pin wiring harness and trailer module. I will be ordering a brake controller shortly. Because of my Volvo being prewired at the back for the trailer module and brake controller I thought it would be simpler to pickup a Prodigy RF so I dont have to run any wires to the front of my vehicle for a traditional brake controller. According to the 7/4 pin harness instruction manual steps 16-23 there are additional steps with the install if using electric brakes. Am I correct in assuming that this is only required for a tradtional brake controller or is this also required for the Prodigy RF?

For the Prodigy RF # TK94FR two work the only functions that need to be active are the lighting circuits and the 12 volt circuit. The 12 volt circuit actually powers the RF so it must be installed. To make it active you will run the 12 volt circuit wire from the back of your new 7-Way connector, under the vehicle using about 20 feet of # 10-1-1 wire, and into the engine compartment near the battery *unless the vehicle battery is located elsewhere then you would run it to that location instead).
Make sure to avoid areas that may pinch or burn the wire. In the engine compartment you will need to mount a 20 amp circuit breaker # PK54520 (for a trailer with 2 to 4 brakes) or a 30 amp circuit breaker # PK54530 (for a trailer with 6 to 8 brakes) to a metal surface.
Route the wire to the AUX post and cut off the extra wire. Then use the left over wire to go from the circuit breaker BAT post to the positive battery terminal.
