Tongue weight is the downward load applied to the trailer hitch. The easiest way to think of it is, as an example, you were using a bike rack. The full weight of the bikes and rack will be on the hitch as it does not make contact with the ground. Though this is 100% of the weight, the tongue weight from a trailer will typically be 10% to 15% of the fully loaded weight. With that said, the tongue weight of a 7,000 pound trailer will be anywhere from 700 pounds to 1,050 pounds.

As the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET has a tongue weight range of 600 pounds at the minimum and 1,000 pounds at the maximum, it will be a good option for the trailer you are renting. Especially as it is a completely bolt on installation. I will say though, if the tongue weight of said trailer is closer to the 15%, you will want to make sure you load it a little more back heavy to stay within range. You want the tongue weight of the trailer to fall as close to the middle of the weight distribution system's capacities as possible and loading loading it front heavy in this case will put it a little to heavy.
