With the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1046, I definitely recommend using tensioners. The Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjuster for Passenger Vehicles # TCMA1 will work great on your 295/40-20 tires. The tensioners will not only keep continuous tension on the cables, but they will also ensure that the cables are fitted properly in order to decrease the probability of loose fitting (which can cause scratches to your spider wheel rims).
In order to make sure that the cables can be safely installed without the potential for wheel well damage, I recommend measuring to make sure you have a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well as well as at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle. I went ahead and attached a diagram that shows these measurements.
If you want an assured way of protecting your rims, the only other option is snow socks like the ISSE Classic Snow Socks - Size 72 - 1 Pair # TCH72. One of the advantages of the snow socks is that the material won't rattle (which can happen with chains/cables). However, with the snow socks, you will not receive the same amount of grip as the cables.
As with all tire chains and cables, I recommend consulting with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure you are following all the guidelines outlined.
