Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Feed the cable through the connection loop

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then feed the extra cable through the second loop to keep it from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Optional rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

I ordered the snow cables for my Subaru 2018 Outback and received them in 3 days! Your customer service is outstanding! I reordered a second set and received them in 4 days. I just had a chance to use them in Atlanta when we had ice and snow. I used only one set on the front and they worked perfectly. i watched the etrailer installation video for a Subaru and it made the easy to install. It took me less then 5 minutes in my garage. (Outside in the snow and ice might take longer). I drove around Atlanta in the ice and snow and the cables performed flawlessly. I plan to buy a set for my daughter. Thanks again!

Sorry, did not get a chance to use them

Super easy to get on and work just fine.

Repeat repeat customer. Amazing service and speedy delivery. Customer service conversed with me via email at 11p (PST) and was able to provide me details from a past order so I didn’t have to run out and locate my tire size codes. I was able to reorder what was needed and the tire chains arrived in two days! Yes, ordered Thursday evening, arrived Saturday. Thank you. I feel so much more secure heading up the mountain now that we have new backups.

I didn't know how to get chains for my GMC Terrain 2016. We are going to Lake Tahoe in November. On their site there was a writeup about my exact situation. GMC claims there are no chains for that model and they cannot be used on the rear tires. We purchased the equipment in the review because he had used them with success. This includes the Glacier Multi-Arm rubber adjusters and the Glacier cable snow tire chains. We feel comfortable now and hopefully will not need to use them. I spoke to a representative from etrailer who confirmed my purchase would probably work.

Super fast shipping, excellent communication and customer service. Haven't used our chains yet but will report back once we have.

We used these on our minivan in a snowstorm in the mountains. The tire cables were pretty easy to put on and take off, and provided excellent traction.

Well made cable chains + tensioners. The carry bag is nice, fits into the "Winter" box in the back of a 2019 Outback.

by:
2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Easy to figure out what size tire chain I needed for my 2019 Subaru Outback- like our previous Outback, chains will likely live in the bag and never be used but it is good insurance on the very rare days when there is something 4wd can't handle. Ordered online, got immediate information on shipping date and they showed up on schedule and as ordered. Have used this brand of chain and this company before- everything worked great.

Chains lived in the bag all winter since Subaru handled the snow we got with no problems. Still happyabout my purchase and service from etrailer

by:
2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

They're tire chains, what can I say... The price was competitive unles you look at used chains on [another site].

The etrailer site made it easy and shipment was fast. I'll wait for a clear, dry day and install them on the front wheels of my 2017 Subaru Outback Touring. Then I'll take them off and probably never open the bag again.

It's always a good idea to carry chains in the mountains in winter, even if you drive a new Subaru. Also recommended: pack bottled water, some food, a fleece blanket, winter sleeping bag and a candle lantern. And drive with a full tank of gas.

2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

I purchased a pair of Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains for my 2016 Subaru Outback to ensure that I can comply with Colorado's chain laws. These chains are relatively easy to put on and take off and they store in a convenient carrying bag. The instructions are clear and have helpful suggestions. I really appreciate etrailer's assistance with finding the right chains for my car and getting them to me quickly.

I haven't tried them out yet, but they arrived quickly!

The tire chains certainly gave me peace of mind knowing they were in the bag in the trunk. Even though I drove through snow this winter, no opportunity to use the chains yet.

2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Shipment was timely. Product as expected. After watching the videos on eTrailer tried them on in my garage. Cable chains relatively easy to put on and get a good fit. On a 2015 Outback it's not easy to reach behind the wheel to connect the link but doable. Definitely good to try before doing it in the snow on the side of the freeway!

2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

These cable chains were purchased as a gift for my son to use on his 2016 Subaru Outback, so I cannot attest to the actual performance. He is headed to Mt. Rainier at the end of his week with wife and two little children. The Park requires chains no matter how many wheels are being driven. I can say that I enjoyed the shopping experience on the etrailer web-site and found the guidance on which product to purchase very helpful. After reading warnings from Subaru maintainers about the use of chains and possible problems, it took some coaxing to get me to buy. The videos were very helpful showing installation. A good shopping experience in all.

I cannot review the product right now as I just received it and purchased it as a "just in case" scenario when we drive from SF to Tahoe at the end of the month. However I really appreciated the customer service when I called to make sure I was ordering the right item. The tracking of the item was also flawless from etrailer and the package actually got here a day earlier than scheduled. The cables come in a handy pouch with instructions and a tag with tire compatibility. All good. Will order again from etrailer for sure.

I bought these snow chains (cables) for unexpected weather changes while traveling. I have separate winter tires & wheels but don’t want to travel around (1000+ mile trips) with winter set up.

Cables will allow me to use factory tires and cables will do the rest. I’ve ordered and used various products from etrailer in the past and always satisfied.

Honda Odyssey

I spent two days trying to figure out which chains were the right ones for my car. I figured out the size of my tire - of the Honda Odyssey, and then realized that all the cheap options, or the more widely available chains were not an option for my vehicle.

After giving up on other main-stream online retailers, i went to google and searched for my tire size, which is where I found etrailer.com - the search on the site was excellent. After just a little bit of browsing, I found the one that would work great for me.

Ordered the product on a Sunday, a day before a national 3-day holiday weekend, and got a personal email, from the retailer, that they received my order, and needed to check up on actually having the product in stock. That is amazing. They let me know, that if they didn't have it in stock, and couldn't get it to me by the same-week Friday, they would connect with me, otherwise they would do everything they could to get me the product on time.

On Monday, which was a holiday ( President's Day ) they emailed again, letting me know that the product had shipped.

I received the chains on Thursday, they are exactly what I needed, and now my family weekend trip to the snow can actually happen!

Thank you!

We go to Honduras in a Mission every year. We set up medical and dental services in the village up the mountain where only 4x4 can reach. When it rains the only way we can get there is if we set up these chains. Is like night and day the difference.
Without chains we got stuck with 3 of the trucks. We set up the chains and it felt as we were driving a tank.

Service and follow up by etrailer.com is excellent but have never needed to use the product. I carry these in my Outback just in case chains are required when going through Donner Pass or the Squaw valley area.

2016 Honda Pilot

Haven't used in snow yet, but tried them on to check fit and they are VERY fast/easy to install (I've always used chains before) and fit very well. Quality looks pretty good (though these are clearly meant for occasional use, not daily living in snow). My only complaint was the 10 minutes it took me to untangle them out of the bag the first time. When I put them away, it was clear immediately that rolling each up individually then 'latching' the hooks to hold the roll in place was a better way than the 'rolling-them-up-together-and-trying-your-best-to-tangle-them' method apparently used at the factory. Also, rolled up individually that way, they fit easily into the bag with plenty of room for the rubber-snuggers, too (some reviews said the bag was too small).

by:

I like that these tire cables/chains are DOT approved USA wide. Easy to install. I just dry fit them to get a feel of installation process. Haven’t had any weather events that needed the use of them yet.

by:

They arrived in good condition and on time. Tried them on the car today and they are much easier to put on than my old tire chains. Would give them 5 stars if only the bag was a little larger. Putting the cables back in the bag is like trying to repack a parachute. Took a lot of pushing and shoving to get them in and then zipped up.

Second time buying from etrailer. Very good communication and speedy delivery. My tire chains where shipped to me days early. George J, from etrailer, sent me an message thanking me for being a return customer and that my chains were being shipped that same day I ordered them. By the way, that was a Sunday. Great personal service from and online retailer. That is uncommon and much appreciated. Thanks George!

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon with Tire Size 225/60R18
We have similar tire cables to the Titan set you referenced that do fit your tire size of 225/60R18 like with the # PW1046 from Glacier but the # TC343DC would not fit. If you wanted my recommendation though I would go with the Konig Easy Fit chains part # TH04115245 since this provides the ultimate in traction, durability, and ease of install. These literally install in a matter of seconds and don't require you to roll around on the ground at all to install either. Check out the install...

The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1046 will fit both the 235/55R19 and 235/60R18 tire sizes you mentioned. For the rubber adjusters I recommend using the kit # PW99 which will fit 16-1/2" to 19" rims. Please note the cables aren't as effective as actual chains - we essentially treat them as a way to stay legal if you're traveling in an area that requires you to have chains on hand. If you actually plan on using chains for traction then go with the kit # TC1146 instead as it has twist...

Any tire chain on any vehicle will require reduced driving speeds; no tire chain can be used at full highway speeds. It is best to keep speeds in the 25 - 30 mph range when using snow chains. If road conditions are bad enough to require chains, then they are also bad enough to justify slowing down! Yes, generally it is the vehicle drive wheels that most benefit from installation of tire chains. But some auto makers may determine that tire chains should not be installed on certain models, trim levels or tire sizes. It all comes down to clearance between the chains and the components within the wheel wells, such as brake lines and suspension parts. It is therefore always best to check your vehicle owner's manual for guidance about use of tire chains before selecting and installing...
