To install a trailer brake controller in your 2022 Ford Ranger you'll first need a trailer wiring harness. For this I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # C56431. This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver side rear bumper. After plugging in the connector, route the 7-way end of the harness along the inside of your bumper toward the center of your vehicle.
Once installation is complete, the 7-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. If necessary, secure the harness with the provided cable ties or with the Mounting Bracket for 7-Way # 18138.
You can now install a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195. This proportional brake controller automatically levels when mounted within a 360-degree vertical range. It includes a customizable LCD display, 5 storable settings, 3 boost levels, battery protection and continuous diagnostics and is transferable between automobiles.
For a great starter ball mount kit I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500lbs # 989900. It has a 1-7/8" hitch and 2" hitch ball to allow you to tow multiple trailers. It has a 1" or 3" rise and a 2" or 4" drop to keep your trailer level while towing.
