Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2018 Ram 2500 w/ Short Bed Needing to Tow a Variety of Trailers

Question:

I am a camper hauler. I currently haul bumper pull units only. I am wanting to haul 5th wheel campers also. I have a 2018 short bed ram 2500. I looked at the autosliding demco hitch. Only issue is I will haul a variety. Is there adapters for those air ride that do not require drilling into campers hitch?

I have a solution for you but with needing to haul a variety of trailers the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550034 is not going to be the best hitch for you. This is because you will need to get an adapter plate for each style of pin box and there are a number of different adapter plates out there.

With needing to tow a variety of trailers, the main focus is going to be hitch height. Most of the time the issues that come up with towing a 5th wheel are from the hitch not being low enough. I have included an option for your truck if you have the OEM prep package or do not. Each hitch is the lowest hitch for your truck in that style that is compatible with a variety of hitches..

2018 Ram 2500 short bed with OEM Prep Package(puck system in bed):
B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3670

2018 Ram 2500 short bed without Prep Package(clean bed or ISR in bed):
Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider # C16541 this hitch will attach to Industry Standard Bed Rails.
If you do not already have Industry Standard Rails then you will also need the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ram Truck # C16427-204. This installation kit will provide you with the Industry Standard Rails needed to mount the Curt A20 5th wheel hitch.

Both the B&W or Curt hitch are going to work better for the purpose you are needing a 5th wheel hitch for. To make hooking up the 5th wheel wiring easier, you can also pick up the Pollak 5th Wheel / Gooseneck T-Connector with 7-Pole # PK11893-11932. This adapter will allow you to move a 7-way connection up into your truck bed to allow for easier hook up to the 5th wheel trailers, while retaining use of your 7-way at the rear of your truck.
