Helpful Expert Reply:

Having the air bag mounted internally like the 5th Airborne Premium Fifth Wheel Air Ride Coupler # 5AB-E1621-610 is going to protect it from the elements and UV rays that could prematurely wear the bag down. Having the air bag on the outside like the Curt Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box - Lippert 1621 & 1621HD - 21,000lbs # LC158778 will leave it susceptible to the elements and UV rays, but these air bags are designed to withstand the elements so you wouldn't see a massive difference in the airbag's lifespan. Essentially both of these pin boxes are the same except for the placement of the airbags and shocks but both will give you a much smoother ride.
