I Think The Reverse Pin On My 7-Way Connector Is Wired Incorrectly How Do I Fix This

Question:

I am connecting a trailer with electric brakes to my 2013 F-250 XL. I need 12v power to charge the breakaway battery. The 7 pin connector on my truck has the pin that i believe should be 12v power labeled as back-up lights. No pins are labeled as power. Do you know how I can switch this? Thanks

This is something you can easily do with a circuit tester, like the Circuit Tester Kit, part # PTW2993, and a second person. The hot lead is a 12V pin and is should not be used for the reverse lights of your trailer. If you are facing your 7-way these are the most common pin positions for proper setup:

1 oclock position = 12 volt hot lead
3 oclock position = right turn/brake light
5 oclock position = brake controller output
7 oclock position = ground
9 oclock position = left turn/brake light
11 oclock position = tail and running lights
Center = reverse lights.

If you have the second person sit in the cab of your vehicle, they can activate the signals, brakes, shift the vehicle into reverse, etc. You will check to see if voltage is coming through the 7-way connector for each function. If the 12V hot lead is attached to the center pin, you will have to disconnect and reconnect some of the wires on the back of the plug. It would also be a good time to trace the wiring to make sure they are going to correct spots on your truck. Most of the time those wires are color coded.
