Do Aftermarket Roof Racks have a Higher Capacity than Factory Rack on a 2006 Ford Explorer

Question:

I have a 2006 Explorer with factory rails and crossbars. Im concerned about weight limits and would like to know the max configuration. Would the max be the same using the factory rack or aftermarket? What would be your recommendation, use fhe factory I already have or purchase new crossbars?

Aftermarket crossbars are normally rated higher than factory crossbars. However, you always have to go by the lowest rated component in the system. You will want to look at the roof rack rails and/or crossbars for a sticker that indicates the weight capacity. Or you can check the owners manual for the factory rack and roof capacities. Or you could call a Ford dealer and they might be able to tell you.

The weight capacity of the Motion 16 cargo box # TH629707 is 165 pounds but again you must go by the lowest rated item in the system. I have included a link to a video review of this cargo box for you.

If it were me, I would stick with the factory roof rack unless you find that it is grossly under rated for what you need.
