Can I Mount A Heater And AC Unit On The Top Of My Cross Trailer.

Question:

We are looking at setting up an enclosed cargo trailer that will normally carry our UTV. But we would also like to use it as a shelter to keep people out of the weather during hot or cold days. What can we mount either on the roof or inside to cool or heat the inside of the trailer? We would like something that is self contained and that is not extremely tall. Heater and AC unit for 8.5 x 18 enclosed Cross Trailer

I would go with the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner w/ Air Distribution Box, Start Capacitor, and Heat Strip - 15,000 Btu # ACM150CH. You will need to make sure your trailer roof is capable of holding this unit(94 pounds) and the people who will be installing it.

In the area it will be installed it will need a roof thickness of at least 2-1/2 inches to mount and a 14x14 inch hole. You will see in the videos attached how to accomplish this.

It has a heat strip that can put out 5,500 BTUs and hour. It can take some of the edge off but it is not capable of heating large areas that are not insulated well.

You will also need some butyl tape like Alpha Systems Butyl Tape for RV Weatherproofing - 20' x 1" x 3/16" # AL28FJ to help insulate and seal gaps before and during installation.

I would also use some Quick Roof Pro Aluminum Repair Tape for RV Roofs - 25' Long x 3" Wide - Silver # QR79FR to help seal around the A/C unit.
For the random patches you may need you can use Alpha Systems 1010 Non-Sag Sealant for RVs - White - 10.3 oz # AL28KV

To power the unit I suggest the 4,500-Watt Portable RV Generator - 3,600 Running Watts - Propane or Gas - Electric Start # 333-0005. It has electric or pull start and can run off of gas or propane.

You will need to add wiring to the trailer to be able to connect the AC unit to the generator.
