Please check with your owners manual to make sure that the cargo that you plan to carry on your the roof of your Prius does not exceed the manufacturers recommendations, or void your warranty.
To carry bikes on the roof of your 2012 Toyota Prius you would first need a roof rack system. To accommodate the weight of up to 4 bikes I would recommend the a Yakima Roof Mount System. This Yakima Roof Rack system has a carrying capacity of 125 pounds, and has 58 inch cross bars which I think would be ideal to accommodate 4 bike carriers, and Yakima states can accommodate up to 5 bikes.
This system has round crossbars and is designed to fit a naked or bare roof, those not equipped with any type of mounting hardware from the factory. The Yakima Roof Mount System consists of the the following parts:
# Y00409 - 58 Inch Crossbars that your cargo carriers mount to.
# Y06117 - BaseClips for the Tower Supports to secure to, these are vehicle specific to mount on your 2012 Prius front door frame.
# Y03536 - RoundBar Adapters to fit the round crossbars on to the towers.
# Y28TR - BaseLine Towers that the adapters attach to and mount to the BaseClips.
With the round bars of the Yakima Roof Rack system that I suggested above I would suggest the Yakima FrontLoader Wheel Mount Bike Rack # Y02103. This bike carrier does not require the front tire to be removed for transport. The wheel grip and sliding rear wheel tray of this bike rack are adjustable to accommodate a variety of bike sizes. It also locks to the roof rack system and has cables to lock the bikes in place as well. It can be folded flat when not being used and does not require any tools for installation.
I have included links to the parts listed above, installation instructions, and some videos for your reference.
