Question:
whats the proper wires to hook it up to a 2001 chevy express with tow package

If your 2001 Chevy Express Van came with a factory 7-Way trailer connector then the blue output brake wire is already ran from the back to the front. It is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. The remaining wires will have to be hardwired. I have linked an FAQ article and video that will help you. You might not need all parts of the video and FAQ.
To find the correct wire to attach to the red wire on the controller you will need a circuit tester like # PTW2993. Test the brake switch wires until you find the one that only has power when you apply the brake pedal. If you find a wire that also shows power with the headlights or turn signals it is not the correct wire.
You may need an additional wiring kit, # 5506 for a trailer with 6 to 8 brakes.
