Can Swagman S64650 XC Bike Rack Carry 42 lb E-Bike
Question:
I have a Swagman XC bike rack which is fantastic, but recently purchased a Trek ebike 42# for my wife. Do I understand correctly that this rack cannot be used safely with her ebike? Which part of the XC rack will not support the added weight? Do you recommend replacing with a Chinook rack? Thank you

Swagman doesn't break down the capacity of their bike racks by component part, so it would be hard to say which part isn't strong enough, but the weight of the bike is supported by the wheel hoops so it would be a safe bet to say that the wheel hoops would be the weak link. This being said, it is possible that you could still use the rack.
Most e-bikes have a removable battery pack. If removing the battery pack puts the weight of the bike below the 35 lb per-bike capacity of the Swagman # S64650 XC bike rack, then you can carry the bike with the battery removed. If the battery isn't removable or if removing it won't reduce the weight of the bike below that 35 lb threshold, the Swagman # S64683 Chinook with its 45 lb per bike weight capacity would be perfect for your needs. The rack can handle tires up to 3 inches wide with wheelbases up to 50 inches.
Unlike your XC, the Chinook can tilt away from the rear of the vehicle with the bikes installed on it for easier vehicle cargo area access. The Chinook rack is compatible with passenger vehicles and motorhomes, but should NOT be installed on a towed vehicle, camper or trailer.
I've linked to a product demonstration video for the Swagman Chinook bike rack.
