Installing a Trailer Hitch and a Brake Controller with Wiring Harness on a 2007 Ford F-150

2007 Ford F150 5.4 triton need to add : trailer hitch, brake controller and wiring harness. Currently have a stock 4 pole connector, unclear witch brake controller and wiring harness would be best for my application. Would appreciate your recommendation

We have everything you need to install a trailer hitch, brake controller and wiring harness on your 2007 Ford F-150 5.4L Triton.

We can start with a trailer hitch. There are many trailer hitch options that are available for your truck, but should keep in mind that aftermarket trailer hitches will only fit on your truck if you do not have a factory hitch installed. You could go with a Class III or a Class IV hitch. A Class III Hitch like the Draw-Tite Max Frame Trailer Hitch, # 75506, has a 6,000 lb towing capacity and a 600 lb tongue weight capacity. A Class IV hitch like the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Hitch, # 41933, has a 10,000 lb towing capacity and 1,000 lb tongue weight capacity. Please note, using a Class IV hitch will not increase the towing capacity of your truck if the trucks towing capacity is lower than 10,000 lbs.

Next, we can look at a brake controller. The brake controller that I would recommend for you is the Prodigy P3, part # 90195. You will also want the Custom Wiring Adapter, # 3035-P. This is a quality brake controller that is easy to set up and use. The wiring adapter will allow you to simply plug in the brake controller without having to cut or splice into any wires on your truck. Finally, you will need a wiring harness to convert your factory 4-way connector to a 7-way connector. For this, I recommend the 7 and 4-Way Wiring Adapter, # 37185. This adapter has a 4-way connector that will connect to your factory 4-way connector to provide power for the trailer lights. You will then have 4 wires left. White for ground, black for 12 volt power, blue for electric brakes and purple for reverse lights.

The white wire can be connected to an existing ground stud or to a clean, bare metal surface on your truck frame. The purple wire can either be spliced into your trucks reverse light circuit at your tail lights or tied off if you do not need the reverse light function. The black and blue wires will splice into an orange 12 volt power wire and a blue electric brake wire that go into a factory plug on the driver side frame rail. You will notice that the truck in the video is a F-250, but the installation procedure will be the same as your truck.
