Troubleshooting Malfunction on Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 on 2009 Ford F-150
Question:
I have a 2009 F 150. I bought the P3 with Ford F-150 adapter kit from you and I bought the factory 4 wire 7 wire harness and connector from a local dealer to replace the factory 4 wire harness that came with the truck. I was able to locate the under dash connector and mounted the P3 Brake controller using the wiring harness to mate the P3 to the factory connector. This all took about 20 min since it was all plug in connections to the factory wiring harness. I have been unable to get the P3 to turn on. I checked and there is a 30A high power fuse under the hood in the brake controller slot #17 and the trailer lights all work but I cant seem to get the brake controller to turn on. The screen remains dark. Any suggestions?

Your Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 may be functional, but might have a different error due to a potential problem with the screen. Unplug the unit for 30 seconds and plug it back in.
If that does not work, you will want to check the wiring to ensure it is not crimped or exposed, creating a short. I recommend testing the wiring on the tow vehicle side with a circuit tester such as # PTW2993. You will want to check the black power wire to see if it is getting juice from the battery. There may be a problem with the tow vehicle to trailer connectors so you will want to check that as well. Also, be sure to check the wiring on the trailer side for any shorts or exposed wiring there. There is also the possibility that you may need additional fuses or relays to make the unit fully functional.
If the wiring looks OK, you can bench test the brake controller by attaching it to a 12-volt battery to see if you are getting power that way. If you are not, then you may have a faulty unit. Tekonsha has a limited lifetime warranty for this device.
