5th Airborne Sidewinder for Fifth Wheel Towed by 2012 Dodge Ram Quad Cab
Question:
I bought a new 2012 Ram Quad cab last year. I had a new Curt E16 5th wheel hitch installed late in 2012. I never had a chance to try in on my Citation 21.5 5th wheel trailer until today. Well I cant make a sharp turn. The Retailer that installed the hitch said it would work.. They lied. My old 1998 Ram quad cab was no problem. So now I either have to buy a slider adapter for the Curt or can I install the Sidewinder kit. I am usually in tight spots where we go camping. What do you think my options are, other than kicking the retailer who recommended it and installed it.

If your Ram has the 5-1/2 foot bed, the Sidewinder would be your only alternative to possibly gain enough clearance for sharp turns. To determine if you will be able to make 90 degree turns while using the Sidewinder, take a look at the clearance formula on the Sidewinder FAQ page I have linked you to. You will need to measure the distance between your hitch jaw and the rear of your cab. Add 22 inches (length of Sidewinder arm) to this measurement. From this sum, subtract half the width of the trailer at the front. If the result is a positive number greater than 4, you will have sufficient clearance for making a 90 degree turn.
If your Ram has the 6 foot bed, you can either go the slider, part # C16560 or go with the Sidewinder. Keep in mind that with the slider option, you will have to stop the vehicle and slide the hitch rearward in order to gain your maximum clearance. You should only slide the hitch rearward for low speed maneuvering, like when you backing into a space at the campground. You should not tow on the road with the hitch slid rearward, as too much weight would be applied behind the rear truck axle. This can lighten the front of the truck to the point where braking and steering performance is severely reduced. Keep in mind that a slider will not always provide enough clearance for 90 degree turns, depending on how wide your trailer is. Going with the Sidewinder would be much more convenient, and would provide the best chance of being able to make unobstructed turns.
The # 5AS16K you referred to is the Sidewinder arm only, the pin box specific turret would also be needed. I will need to know the manufacturer and model number of your existing OEM pin box. If you could provide this information, I would be happy to recommend a pin box for you.
